Hobgoblins

Rising out of a long dark age in service to dark powers, hobgoblins have quickly become a major force in the world. Though younger than many other races, their fecundity and knack for military technology have enabled them to colonize or conquer much of the world. Scholars debate whether humans or hobgoblins first learned to forge metal weapons, but hobgoblins certainly have perfected the craft. Siege engines, fortifications, tactics, strategy, and aggressive resource acquisition are all in their bailiwick. Hobgoblins as a whole place little value on culture and art that aren’t related to warfare. Their weapons and forts, however, are often spectacular in more than just their efficacy.

Physical Description: Similar in many ways to humans, hobgoblins are shorter, with longer arms and shorter legs in proportion to their torsos. They have squat faces and pointy ears, fingers, and toes. Their eyes are often deeply recessed and beady. Common skin colors are dull blues and greens or grey. Hobgoblins are often hairless, though sometimes they grow greasy greenish black or crimson hair.

Society: Hobgoblin societies are strictly regimented and nearly every pursuit is dedicated toward support of the military. They toil in cramped mines, labor for endless hours on plantations or kitchen messes, and drill endlessly at warfare. Those who are intelligent find positions of authority and acclaim in designing new weapons of war and feats of engineering. Hobgoblins are mistrustful of magic, though they of course value anything that might bring them victory. As a compromise, they allow their magically inclined members to live on the fringes of their settlements.

Relations: Hobgoblins frequently subsume other races as client nations, though just as often they claim an area and take the native inhabitants as slaves. Some of the larger hobgoblin empires are slightly gentler, responding to the weight of power with decadence and sloth. While still brutal slave-masters, these empires more often leave conquered peoples to rule themselves, so long as they provide tribute.

Alignment and Religion: Hobgoblins in general are Lawful Evil. Many hobgoblin regimes are strictly atheistic, while others worship Gods of war and glory. Some few colonies instead focus on civics and technology, and lean toward Lawful Neutral.
